Throughout the academic year Oakfield Academy will be hosting a series of Parent Information Sessions which we hope will prove useful and informative and will cover a range of topics throughout the year. The topics of the sessions have been chosen to reflect what parents have told us they would find beneficial in supporting children with their academic, social and emotional development and will take place roughly once every term during the course of the year. The sessions are open to all and we are always looking for ideas on topics for future sessions. If you have any suggestions, please email the Academy Reception.
We will keep this page updated with links, resources and downloads relevant to sessions that have already taken place, as well as dates, times and information on future sessions.
Session 5 –
This session covered the topics of Social Media Apps and Online Behaviour, and featured two guest speakers who will talk from two very different perspectives.
Oakfield parent, journalist, author and friend of the Academy Keith Stuart who gave the latest information about smart phone apps that are being used by young people to communicate and share pictures, videos and other media with their friends and ‘the wider world’, while PCSO Gary Maule spoke about the social and emotional ‘fall out’, when online behaviour between young people and their peers turns sour. He suggested strategies you could use, as parents, to avoid negative online behaviours in the first place, but also provide signposts to support in the event that your child feels they are being bullied, harassed or treated unfairly on an online platform.

Session 4 –
This session was run by the team from SHARE (Schools Health And Resilience Education) http://www.sharesomerset.co.uk/, who aim to improve the mental health and emotional well-being of young people in Secondary and Middle Schools in Somerset. They want to change our culture by breaking down the stigma of mental health issues, and by helping young people become more resilient so they are better equipped to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour. Topics that will be covered in the session include:
- Understanding your child’s behaviour- why do they get angry/ upset?
- Why do teenagers experience mental health difficulties?
- What is ‘normal’ behaviour and what should cause concerns?
- Ways to improve your child’s wellbeing
- Emotion coaching with your child
