The Humanities department at Oakfield Academy strives to develop our pupils’ learning about the world around us in the past, present and the future. All subject knowledge contributes towards the development of the world we live in.

Geography helps us to understand basic physical systems that affect landscapes and livelihoods, learn the location of places and the physical and cultural characteristics of those places in order to function more effectively in our increasingly interdependent world and to understand the geography of past times and how geography has played important roles in the evolution of people, their ideas, places and environments.

Our Specialist Humanities Team: Mr Adam Reynolds (Head of Humanities), Miss Sidney Morris.

Oakfield Academy is delighted to announce that is has received The Secondary Geography Quality Mark for 2022. The SGQM is a prestigious award which recognises quality and progress in geography departments through excellent leadership, curriculum development and innovative and dynamic teaching and learning. The process involves a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which the team at Oakfield Academy continues to embrace new and innovative approaches to help the pupils in their learning and how well pupils demonstrated their understanding of geography as a ‘central and ever changing aspect of their every day lives.’

The feedback was also very complimentary of the opportunity afforded to our pupils to challenge and further their understanding. This has been enabled through methods such as the use of open ended questions and developing a scholarship approach to geography and a love of learning for the subject outside of the classroom.
