Chess News

16 October 2025

On Saturday 11th October seven of our chess club played in their first tournament of the academic year hosted by Bath Juniors. No podium finishes, but all played well and did themselves and the Academy proud. Particularly well done to Rubus, who won three games and drew one to come 5th/10 in the under 14s grouping, and Theo Ravenscroft & Isaac Anderson, who both won three games each coming 6th & 9th overall on rankings out of 17 in the under 11s. Congratulations to Yowan Gibson, Bertie Sledge & Tyler Amphlett for whom this was their debut tournament, and we mustn't forget Sam MacDonald who impressed the volunteer arbiters with his resilience.  Lots of lessons to learn, particularly slowing down and analysing their opponents’ moves and remembering they have fifteen minutes to play on the clock,  not two! Thank you to Sasha our fantastic Chess Tutor for inviting us along, pictured below with the Oakfield Academy team.

Year 7 Rounders Team

3 July 2025

On Tuesday 1st July we took the Year 7 Rounders team over to Selwood Academy for the Annual Year 7 Mendip Rounders Tournament. A newly formed group of pupils played some great rounders in the heat of the day. They improved massively as the afternoon progressed. Whilst in batting as we started hitting the balls we were able to score more Rounders and in field we established our roles on pitch. In the first round against Selwood they out batted us scoring a whopping 8 rounders to our 2 but it was good effort and we were finding our feet. Player of the match went to Aimee Bryant. Our second game was against the overall winners of the tournament the Blue School. We improved hugely in this game and some great hitting by several of our players enabled us to score more rounders but still not quite enough to win. Player of the match went to Betty who showed some really consistent bowling. In our final game, we were drawing with 1 minute to go against Hugh Sexeys but unfortunately they managed to hit a long ball and score an extra rounder leaving the result at 5 Rounders to Hugh Sexeys and 4 to Oakfield. Player of the match went to Ella Ecob. A really great effort by all and can’t wait to see them all return to play in Year 8. A massive well done to all involved: Lacey Pitman, Leah Brickell, Ella Ecob, Francesca Jones, Betty Bell-Fraser, Ruby Maudsley, Aimee Bryant, Rowan Packman and Hazel Dent

The Poetry Slam final this year was a wonderful event - thank you to the many parents and pupils who came along to support. We were treated to five fantastic performances - everyone did brilliantly and should be very proud of themselves. In a very tight contest, the judges declared Theo Ravenscroft our winner, and Anya McCarthy and Emmeya Micharet Ayres runners-up. Elody Jarvis and Coralie Holden-Shack also made it through to the final, which is a fabulous achievement. Well done to all our competitors, and thank you to our judges Mrs Thomas, Mr Bowker, Rosie Milkins and Sophia Dowson. Thank you also to the Year 5 English team for working so hard with their classes to produce such top quality poems!
